I tried to make a 12in x 12in x 0.5in fiberglass laminate using polyester resin and fiberglass (bi-axial cloth 1708).

The goal of this exercise is to try to come up with an affordable method to create fiberglass laminates that will be used for several purposes during this refit project (e.g. thru-hull backing plates, deck backing plates, etc.).

I used a Quart of polyester resin an 16 layers of 1708 bi-axial cloth.

It is currently curing in my garage. The temperature in my garage was below 70F and so I left a 60W infrared heating bulb close to the laminate.

I will post the results soon!! Here is the current status:

  1. You can buy fiberglass board which would be great to use in areas of like under the mast or where ever you have something going through the deck for if water does leak through it will be going through that solid sheet of fiberglass board then into the balsa decks. I’m having a brain fart and can’t think of the name of the fiberglass board I have seen online. James town distributors sell it.
